UBATAMA by Daisuke Hayata

Self-Publsihed (2012)
32 Pages, 30 x 22.5 cm, Paperback, Edition of 750

UBATAMA is a compilation of landscape photographs taken using moonlight as the source of light. Exploring the depths of the night, where artificial light does not exist (in an attempt to replicate the darkness of the pre-modern age), Hayata raises the question of whether the human relationship with darkness has changed with the invention of artificial light. The title is a word borrowed from Japanese traditional ‘tanka’ poetry, where it is used as a prelude to the words ‘darkness’ and ‘night’. The project originally started in 2009 and within three years thousand of images were produced - the book, however, includes a careful selection of twenty five photographs.
