Sometimes I Cannot Smile by Piergiorgio Casotti

Self-Publihsed (2013)
168 Pages, 17.5 x 24 cm, Hardcover

Since 2009, photographer Piergiorgio Casotti has been travelling to Tasiilaq, the remote capital of East Greenland, to uncover the struggle of young people who live there. This riveting series of black and white images documents the problem of teen suicide in a place where life and death have other meanings. A backdrop of bleak, frozen landscapes and nature’s merciless grip frames the human toll of violence, boredom and emptiness. Suicide is experienced differently here than elsewhere, as a way to solve problems, the result of a deeply ingrained cultural legacy. Part of Casotti’s Arctic Spleen project, it includes a text by Casotti and a young Greenlander’s diary entries.
